Western Canada District

Kiewit’s Western Canada District has been a leading heavy construction contractor since the early 1940s, building projects from British Columbia to Manitoba to the Northwest Territories. Our work includes highways, bridges, mass transit systems, mine site development and open pit operations, hydroelectric powerhouses, wind-power plants, dams and industrial facilities. As the Project Engineering Manager will support construction activities by planning, organizing and implementing project management tools (i.e., project controls systems, engineering interface, subcontract and materials management, purchasing, scheduling). The role will provide project administration or support to a Project Manager on larger projects and manage technical and administrative staff to facilitate instruction management services.

Primary Responsibilities

• Responsible for managing and directing the engineering team by providing the communication, coordination and follow-up necessary to meet the project goals and objectives

• Maintains ongoing training and mentoring of project team

• Provides ongoing project information and project reviews as required by management

• Establishes project procedures consistent with contractual documents and the Kiewit Company Quality Plan for all engineering work

• Coordinates training and compliance measures to ensure project procedures are followed

• Monitors and ensures all discipline work is in compliance with project procedures

• Ensures all work products are consistent with industry standards and in accordance with good engineering practice and applicable codes, and in compliance with all pertinent legal codes and requirements

• Ensures scope of work, schedule, and budget are clearly defined and understood by senior management and all project participants, including client

• Determines, controls, and maintains overall project and discipline schedules and budgets

• Tracks schedule and budget progress with project milestones and takes all action necessary to keep project on track

• Identifies and secures necessary approvals for all changes in project scope, budget and/or schedule

• Maintains ongoing communication with client, making adjustments as necessary to comply with client's needs within contractual obligations, or adjusting project deliverables to meet client and Kiewit needs

• Serves as Kiewit's engineering representative with client, constructor, subcontractors, and vendors at Kick-Off meetings, job walks, project review, and other meetings and correspondence

• Maintains current working knowledge of basic engineering fundamentals and practices through continued education and continuous review of discipline improvements

• Help drive the company environmental health and safety programs at the project level, driving a safety-oriented approach to work


• Bachelor of Science degree (B. S.) in engineering in any discipline from a four-year college or university

• 15+ years’ related experience and/or training, specifically in the infrastructure/heavy civil type work

• 5+ years' experience required in an engineering management position

• Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) certification is preferred

• Must be competent in the use of computer software applications used by Kiewit for project control and administration, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and Outlook

Working Conditions

• Fast-paced office environment; must be able to interact professionally with all levels of management while simultaneously manage a diversified workload and challenging situations efficiently and effectively

• Must be able to regularly sit, stand, walk and talk and listen

• Occasionally lift and move up objects up to 30 pounds

• Willing to relocate and/or travel in Canada, U.S., Internationally and to remote project sites
