The South West Calgary Ring Road Project is looking for Materials Testing Lab Technicians! Our Materials Testing Laboratory Technician will be responsible for testing and inspecting various construction materials such as soils, aggregates, asphalt, and concrete for quality control/quality assurance purposes. They will also be responsible to prepare field and lab inspection and testing reports and provide technical support for construction quality control personnel.


  • Conducting following laboratory and field tests:

  • Soil Particle Size Analysis using Hydrometer

  • Specific Gravity of Soil

  • Sieve Analysis

  • Moisture-Density Relation of Soil (Proctor)

  • Moisture and Density of Soil Using Nuclear Gauge

  • Sampling and Testing Fresh Concrete (Slump, Air Content, Temperature and Density)

  • Concrete and Grout Compressive Strength

  • Wet concrete testing per ACI/ASTM standards

  • Aggregate gradation/sieve analysis testing per ASTM standards

  • Concrete compression testing per ACI/ASTM standards

  • Entering test data in web based software and MS Excel

  • Cleaning, maintaining, and calibrating test equipment

  • General laboratory cleaning and maintenance as required

  • Ability to work alone or a team member


  • Minimum 3-5 years of relevant experience in heavy civil construction

  • High School Diploma/DEG and/or Civil Engineering Technology Diploma or similar experience preferred

  • CCIL or ACI certification highly desired.

  • Radiation Safety and TDG (Portable Gauge Users) Certification preferred

  • Proficient in MS Excel and MS Word

  • Must have a valid class 5 (or better) driver’s license with clean drivers abstract

  • Must be able to communicate well with co-workers

  • Must be able to work under pressure

  • Must be able to meet all safety requirements and applicable safety policies

  • The successful candidate must successfully complete a site pre-access drug and alcohol test

  • Ability to work cooperatively independently and with a team in a fast-paced and complex environment


  • Able to work shift work as required, including night shift

  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions

  • The ability to stand, crouch and kneel for long periods of time.

  • Manual dexterity, balance for working on scaffolding.

  • Requires standing and bending over for extensive periods of time. Often requires crawling, climbing, grasping, kneeling, squatting, and twisting.

  • Requires working at heights, climbing and descending ladders frequently.

  • Candidates should be able to lift weight (50lbs), able to work on heights.
